October 9, 2009 (Edmonton, AB) – There are light flurries in Edmonton this evening as Canada’s top cyclocross riders prepare for the 2009 CX Nationals on Saturday in Edmonton, hosted by the Juventus Cycling Club, followed by the Jim Horner Cyclocross GP on Sunday. The forecast for Saturday is sun and cold – about 0 degrees – so look for a fast race on a hard-packed 3.2km course.
All of the heavy hitters are in town including Geoff Kabush (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) to defend his Elite men’s title while Wendy Simms, the 2008 Elite women’s winners is pregnant and on the sidelines supporting her Master A competitor husband Normon Thibault. That means the top spot in the women’s race is open and Natasha Elliott (Garneau/Chaussure-Oglivy) is gunning for it with veteran multi-decorated rider Alison Sydor (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) ready to make her work for it.
In the U23 men’s race the face off looks like it’s Edmonton’s David Larson, 2nd last year, up against BC’s top rider Evan Guthrie, up from the Junior ranks and ready to grab the gold if he can.
