October 10, 2009 (Edmonton, AB) – The Elite men’s race is underway with 37 starters vying for the title of 2009 CX National champion as defending champ Geoff Kabush (BC) Maxxis-Rocky Mountain is in the mix. The riders are being called up and they’ll be racing for 60 minutes on the 3.2km course.
Lap 1
Kabush jumps in front with a long train behind.
As they hit the bowl near the 1/2 way point it’s Kabush leading with Aaron Schooler (AB) Team H&R Block Kona in second followed by a big train… now Kabush attacks and has a gap on Schooler.
Lap 2
Kabush has a 7 sec lead over Schooler and Tyler Trace (BC) Red Truck Racing with two riders just behind – one is Derrick St. John (ON) Garneau Club Chaussure Ogilvy.
Lap 3
It’s still Kabush with 10s over new second place rider St. John followed by Schooler in 3rd with Trace in 4th and Shawn Bunnin (AB) Team Alberta in 5th.
Lap 4
Defending champ Kabush is still in front with 15s on St. John and Trace now in 3rd as Schooler is off the pace another 8s back in 4th. Then it’s Bunnin in 5th at 15s more followed by Craig Ritchie, Matthew Hewitt, Shaun Adamson and Mike Garrigan.
Lap 5 – 4:08 pm local / 6:08 pm EST
Over the half way point it’s Kabush extending his lead to 30s over St. John in second and Trace in 3rd with Schooler in 4th and Bunnin further back in 5th as Ritchie is gaining on him. Garrigan is also moving up.
Lap 6
Kabush is lapping riders as he keeps extending his lead. St. John continues in second but Trace has fallen of to 4th as Schooler takes over 3rd. Bunnin remains further back in 5th with Ritchie trying to catch him as Garrigan and Hewitt are together in 7th and 8th. It’s starting to flurry again…
Lap 7 Final
Kabush has hit the bowl as they’re on their final lap. St. John continues in second at 30s with Schooler 5s behind him and Trace in 4th, Bunin in 5th, Ritchie 6th, Garrigan 7th, Hewitt 8th. Kabush powers ahead as he’s confident of another victory.
