2008 Tim Hortons Road Nationals — Elite/U23 Men\’s RR Full Results, Photos Live Updates

July 6, 2008 (Saint-Georges, QC) — Once again there’s fabulous weather in Beauce, bright, sunny and hot, for the Elite/U23 Men’s road race with over 150 starters who will complete 18 laps of the 9.6km circuit for a total of 172.8km. The men’s course is very challenging with lots of twists, turns, hills, and a 1km climb to the finish line.

Lap 1
The pace is quick from the get-go as the men are off and are ready to race. There’s an initial break as Eric Wohlberg (ON) Symmetrics Cycling, Martin Gilbert (QC) Équipe du Québec and Mark Pozniak (ON) Team Ontario have formed a break off the front.

Lap 2
Six riders have bridged to the break – Dominique Perras (QC), Andrew Randell (ON), Ryan Roth (ON), Mark Walter (ON), Jean-Sébastien Perron (QC) EVA-Devinci and Pascal Bussiere (QC) 2peer.com … the lead is now 41 seconds.

With 3km to go on lap 2 their lead is now 1:08.

Correction – Roth, Randell and Perras are NOT in the lead group – there was a foul up with the rider numbers – it’s Georges-Édouard Duquette (QC) EVA-Devinci and Jacob Erker (AB) Symmetrics Cycling – so 8 riders are in the lead break.

Lap 3
The leaders are at 1:38 but Dominique Rollin (QC) Toyota-United is at the front of the peloton leading the charge to reel them in.

Gilbert has crashed and is trying to get back on. Zack Garland (NL) Kona-Adobe and Mathieu Toulouse (QC) EVA-Devinci have also crashed – Toulouse is back on.

Lap 4
Gilbert is with Zach Bell (YK) Symmetrics about 30 seconds behind the lead break of 7 riders with the peloton behind them.

Gilbert and Bell have bridged to the leaders – 9-strong now – that has a 3:43 lead (we understand) over the peloton. Riders are approaching the end of lap 4.

Lap 5
Derrek Ivey (ON) Mazurcoaching.com has attacked and is 1:40 behind the leaders. Behind him at 2:04 there are two riders Derrick St. John (ON) Jet Fuel Coffee and Nicolas Lefrançois (QC) CIBC Wood-Gundy – with peloton at 2:20 (not 3:43 must have been 2:43 above).

Lap 6
As the riders begin the sixth lap the peloton has come alive and has caught the three riders and is now 1:20 behind the 9 leaders.

Five riders are trying to bridge to the leaders – Ivey, Kevin “Buck” Miller (ON) Team RACE Pro, Darko Ficko (ON) (La Bicicletta/J. Lindeberg, Bruno Langlois (QC) VW, Jeff Sherstobitoff (BC) Symmetrics Cycling. The pack is at 1:38.

Lap 7
As the riders start lap seven the 9 leaders have a 1:12 lead over the 5 chasers and the pack is at 2:08.

Four of the 5 chasers have made contact with the leaders… Ficko is still about 30 seconds back.

Lap 8
The gap to the 13 leaders is under 1 minute – Ficko was swallowed up by the pack – when this lap is completed the race will be 1/2 over.

We understand Andrew Randell (ON) Symmetrics and Jamie Sparling (AB) Trek Red Truck P/B Mosaic Home have dropped out.

Lap 9
The 13 leaders are down to 12 as Pozniak was dropped – we understand there’s a group of 12-13 that are now chasing the leaders but the gap is unclear.

A group of 6 have now attacked jumped into the lead – Walters, Erker, Langlois, St. John, Christian Meier (BC) Symmetrics Cycling (? to be confirmed) and the 6th still to come.

Lap 10
Radio contact is spotty… we understand several splinter groups have formed behind the 6 leaders still in front.

Lap 11
The race has blown apart – the 6 leaders are still out front with a group of 4 chasing them at 1 minute followed by another group of 6-7 riders we believe, and then a group of about 25 riders which is the remnants of the main peloton. We hope to verify and update this shortly.

The 4 chasers are at 1:10 – Roth, Wohlberg, Perras, Jean-Michel Lachance (QC) VW (?)… the 25 riders are at 2 min (?).

Lap 12
With 6 six laps to go the leaders are still about 1 minute ahead of the 4 chasers with a 3rd group of 6-10 riders behind them with we think Rollin, Bell, Gilbert and Charles Dionne (QC) Équipe du Québec, followed by the larger group of 25 riders – it’s unclear which of the splinter groups contain 2007 champ Cam Evans (BC) Symmetrics and team mate Svein Tuft, 2008 ITT winner.

Lap 13
More re-shuffling with 5 laps to go… the leaders had 5 riders (not 6) and have dropped St. John so it’s 4 out front including Walters, Erker, Langlois and Meier with a 1:08 lead over a larger chase group now including Roth, Wohlberg, Perron, Keven Lacombe (QC) Équipe du Québec, Eric Boily (QC) Volkswagen, Toulouse, Dave Vukets (ON) Trek Red Truck P/B Mosaic, Will Routley (BC) Symmetrics and David Veilleux (QC) Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast.

Laps 14-15
After almost 4 hours of racing the leaders have dropped Walter so it’s two Symmetrics riders, Erker and Meier, with Langlois out front – they’re 1:30 ahead of 4 chasers that include Walter, Roth, Wohlberg, St. John – a 3rd group is 35 seconds behind them including Vukets, Perron, Lacombe, Boily, Toulouse, Veilleux and Routley.

Lap 16
There are 3 laps to go and no change in race. Now Erker has been dropped by Meier and Langlois and is on his own at 23 seconds.

Lap 17
Two laps to go with Meier and Langlois out front and Erker at 40 sec. followed by Roth and Wohlberg about 1 minute behind him… it’s unclear how far back the other chasers are.

Lap 18 Final
One to go with Meier and Langlois out front and Erker in third at 1 minute with the chasers about 1 minute further behind.
