2008 Junior Track Worlds – Days 2 and 3 Report – Canada\’s Aitcheson 20th in Points Race

July 14, 2008 (Cape Town, SA) – Day two of the Junior Track World Championships saw the women contesting the 2km individual pursuit. This event is often an indicator of talent in the senior ranks and an obvious example of this is Hanka Kupfernagal of Germany who set the world record of 2:25.279 back in 1992 before going on to a storied career.

In the qualifying round of the pursuit, Ashlee Ankudinoff of Australia set down the best time with a 2:31.893 beating out fellow countrywomen Sarah Kent who finished with a time of 2:32.190. Gemma Dudley of New Zealand rounded out the top three with a time of 2:32.772.

Laurie-Anne Dupont-Renaud and Jessica Kisell competed in the event for Canada and did admirably in their first major international track event. The Canadians rode to 17th and 18th respectively. Dupont-Renaud finished with time 2:41.061, averaging 44.704km/h while Kissel averaged 44.58 km/h to finish with a time of 2:41.507. In the finals Ankudinoff rode a 2:34.393 to defeat Kent who rode in at 2’:35.531 while Dudley claimed third with a time of 2:34.393.

Day 3
The competition continued today with Canada’s Ryan Aitcheson of Kitchener, ON, contesting the 25km points race. Aitcheson commented before the race, “I really wanted to make the finals, I was a bit nervous today, but our coach Jayson (Gillespie) told me as long as I didn’t ride in the middle of the pack, I would be safe.” Aitcheson rode well in the qualifying round today and made it into the finals with an 11th place.

Yu Motosuna of Japan took the win in Heat One with a very impressive ride winning 2 of the 6 sprints along the way. In the second heat America’s Taylor Phinney earned himself 31 points on way to victory by a margin of two points over second placed Vitaly Barbas of Russia.

A total of 21 riders took part in the Men’s 25km Points Race final. Tosh Van Der Sande would ultimately take the win in what was an exciting finale to the day’s events. The main instigator in Monday’s race was Luke Durbridge of Australia. Durbridge drove two separate breaks which gained a lap on the field. Van Der Sande and eventual second placed Cristobal Olavarria of Chile, simply had that little extra in the sprints which relegated Durbridge to third place. Phinney was a marked man all race and every attempt he made was quickly neutralized. This meant that he, along with the winner of the first qualifying heat, Motosuna, were two of 7 riders unable to take a lap. Aitcheson, racing in his largest track race to date placed 20th, and is already planning to build on the experience.

Racing continues tomorrow with Dupont Renaud taking part in the women’s points race.
