2008 Cyclocross Championships Elite Men, Full Results, Photos, Updates

October 11, 2008 (Edmonton, AB) – The Elite Men’s race has begun with 32 men on the start line in great conditions under sunny cloudless skies as the men complete 60 minutes of racing and will likely cover 7-8 laps of the 3.1km course.

Lap 1
Ryan Hopping (AB) United Cycle, Mathew Hewitt (QC) Red Hot and Geoff Kabush (BC) Team Maxxis jump into the lead as the men begin their first lap.

Lap 2
Kabush is in front as they start lap 2 with defending champ Mike Garrigan (ON) Jet Power/Epicride on his wheel. At 20 sec. is the chasing peloton lead by Tyler Trace (BC) Trek Red Truck and Shaun Adamson (AB) Juventus.

Lap 3
Kabush holds on to the lead with Garrigan on his wheel with Derrick St. John (ON) Stevens Cross at 15 seconds followed by Trace in 4th and Kevin Noiles (BC) Trek Red Truck racing P/B Mosaic Homes in 5th. The pack is starting to string out behind.

Lap 4
Kabush leads as they start lap 4 with Mike Garrigan still right on his wheel and St. John in 3rd at 22 seconds. Trace is just behind in 4th another 3 sec. back followed by Noiles in 5th a few more seconds behind. The men completed lap 3 in 7.5 min. the fastest lap time of the day.

Lap 5
It’s a nailbiter as Kabush continues to lead with the defending champ Garrigan just behind him. Ontario’s St. John is holding down 3rd another 14 sec. back with Trace giving up a bit of ground now at 15 sec. in 4th and Team Alberta’s Shawn Bunnin taking over 5th from Noiles.

Kabush attacks and creates a gap on Garrigan… Bunnin starts to move up as well as Trace is falling off the pace.

Lap 6
Kabush has a 23-sec lead as the men start lap 6 with Garrigan in 2nd and St. John still in 3rd another 20 sec. behind. In 4th it’s Bunnin another 20 sec. behind with Noiles still in 5th.

Lap 7 Final
Kabush has a commanding 37-sec. lead and looks like he will add the 2008 CX Nationals title to his resume with Garrigan in 2nd and St. John in 3rd another 15 seconds back and charging. Another 20 sec. behind is Kevin Noiles who has taken over 4th with Bunnin a few seconds behind him in 5th, as Trace holds on to 6th.
