2008 BMX Worlds – Challenge Class Gold for Canada – Day 2 Report and Full Results

May 30, 2008 (Taiyuan, China) – Day two of the 2008 UCI World BMX Championships saw the 15 & over classes compete, with Canada bringing home more hardware. The day’s highlight was Kelowna, BC’s Connor McCormack in the 15 Boys class who had a stellar race. Out of the gate it was the Australian rider in the lead with McCormack putting the heat on in second. Halfway down the third straight, McCormack put in a smooth ride through the rhythm section, easily passing the Australian rider to take the lead, and held onto it to take the win. In the words of Connor’s mom, “My baby’s a World Champion!”

In 16 Boys action, 2007 World Champion Tory Nyhaug from Coquitlam, BC was unable to defend his title, however still was able to capture a spot on the podium with a bronze medal performance. In a stacked gate full of Auzzies and French, Nyhaug had a great start but quickly got the squeeze down the first straight. A bobble through the second straight dropped him further back in the pack, but Tory kept up the fight and regained a few spots, eventually holding onto third place, while the French & Auzzie were 1-2 respectively.

Complete video coverage of the races is now available to watch on bmx-videos.com, and full official results will be posted shortly.

Tomorrow Canada’s Junior and Senior Elite men will battle for 1 of 6 spots remaining for a Beijing Olympic berth. In the Elite women’s race, although Canada’s Sam Cools has already earned a spot on Canada’s Olympic team, she is still in the hunt for the coveted BMX World Champion title that has eluded her for three years.
