July 10, 2007 (Saint-Georges de Beauce, QC) — It’s a beautiful day in Beauce today as the weather is co-operating for the U23 Men’s road race that will soon be underway with 56 starters. The 138.4 km course is a 120km loop with challenging hills at the 40km and after the 70km mark. The race begins with a 4km neutralized start and ends with a 2.5 finishing circuit characterized by a 1.5km climb to the finishline.

20km
At the the 20km mark a group of 8 riders have broken away and established a strong lead including Sebastian Porter (ON), David Bergeron (QC, Blueberi-Martin Swiss), Kevin Hazzard (ON), Jean-Michel Lachance (QC, Garneau-Crocs), Ryan Beliveau (Caylon/Litespeed), Joel Dion-Poitras (EVA-Devinci), Eric Roberston (ON, Team RACE) and one rider we have yet to identify. At 40 seconds on his own is Thomans Foster (ON) while the main pack is at 3:15.

60km
The unidentified rider in the break of 8 riders is Charly Vives (Caylon/Litespeed). Foster could not bridge to the leaders and fell back to rejoin the main pack. There have been flurries of attempts from the peloton but nothing has stuck – a group of four riders looked like they might get away but failed. The main pack is at about 4 min. and starting to pick up speed as the feed zone at the 70km mark approaches.

70km
Just past the feed zone at the 70km mark and halfway through the race and the same break of 8 riders is leading however the main pack is making gains on them now at 2:10.

98km
They’re approaching a big climb and the break will soon be caught as David Veilleux (QC, Jittery Joe’s ) is leading the main group’s charge.

The peloton has hit the climb and is splitting up as the riders head up the ascent as they close in on the break.

The break has been caught except for 2 riders, Jean-Michel Lachance (QC, Garneau-Crocs) and Joel Dion-Poitras (EVA-Devinci) are on their own being chased by a group of 8 riders lead by Veilleux, followed by the main pack.

3-4kms to the Finishing Circuit
Now Christian Meier (BC, Symmetrics) and Ryan Anderson (BC, Trek/Red Truck) are leading with a few splinter groups behind and a larger group of about 19 riders just behind them that includes top riders such as Veilleux, Keven Lacombe (QC, Trek/VW), Brandon Crichton (BC, Symmetrics), Matt Guse (QC, Caylon/Litespeed) etc.

Final lap
Meier and Anderson have held on to their lead as the riders are now on the final lap and will soon hit the final climb to the finish. The leaders are being chased by a group of six at 43 sec. lead by Eric Boily (QC, EVA/Devinci), Max Plaxton (BC, La-Z-Boy), Lacombe, Jamie Lamb (Garneau-Crocs), Veilleux, Gabriel Epstein (ON)… then Guse.
