July 10, 2007 (Saint-Georges de Beauce, QC) — The Elite Women’s road race is underway under blue skies, 27 degree temperature, with a light wind. There are 56 starters that will complete a 127kms starting with a neutralized start. The first 55 kms are similar to the men’s U23 course, then the women’s route diverges and rejoins the men’s route at about 15km to the finishing circuit where they’ll complete 2.5 laps, each with the 1.5km climb to the finishline.
26km
Emilie Roy (QC, Vinci Specialized Menikini) has been active at the front and now has a 10-second lead with Natasha Elliot (ON, The Cyclery).
Alison Testroete (BC, Team Expresscopy.com) is trying to get away and bridge up to the two leaders.
47km
Roy has dropped Elliot and is pulling away on her own – she has 1:40 on the main pack which is not reacting as riders size each other up.
80km
Roy continues to be away on her own with 47 kms to go and has 1:25 on the main pack which appears to be uneasy as no one is making any moves. Team Expresscopy.com is at the front – time will tell as to how they’ll deal with each and with Roy.
86km
Roy is starting to fade now and her lead has dropped to 26 seconds – it looks like she’ll be absorbed by the main pack soon.
93km
Not ready to give in Roy has rebounded and her lead is now back up to 50 seconds with Team Ontario’s Crystal Jeffs halfway between Roy and the chasing pack trying to bridge to the leader.
97km
Jeffs has caught Roy and they have 36 seconds on the peloton with Team Expresscopy.com’s Gina Grain now making a move as well and she’s 10 seconds behind the leaders.
100km
Grain has bridged to the leaders and the three have 36 seconds on the pack as they approach the run in to the final circuit.
Moriah MacGregor (BC, AE Sport Development) and Marni Hambleton (BC, Symmetrics) have made a move to catch the leaders and are mid-way between the pack and the leaders.
104km
MacGregor and Hambleton have made contact with the leaders and the 5 have a 1:10 on the chasing peloton being lead by Leigh Hobson (ON) Cheerwine.
Team Expresscopy.com has moved to the front to counter any moves to protect Grain who looks strong.
108km
The gap is 1:35 now as this surely looks like the winning break as the riders are about to enter the final circuit loop.
110km
The gap is now 1:48.
Final Lap
Four riders have jumped to the front Hambleton, MacGregor, Grain and Roy as the riders head into the final lap.
A chase group with Felicia Gomez Aarons/L5Flyers , Alex Wrubleski (Sask) Colvaita Sutter Home , Erinne Willock (BC) Team Expresscopy.com, Julie Beveridge* (AB) Team Alberta and Leigh Hobson (ON) Cheerwine is chasing hard at 30 seconds. Behind them are Joëlle Numainville* (QC) Team Expresscopy.com and Jenny Trew (BC, Giant).
