2007 Tim Hortons Road Nationals — Elite Men’s RR Full Results and Live Updates

July 11, 2007 (Saint-Georges de Beauce, QC) — It’s a very humid day in Beauce with a strong chance of rain, and thunderstorms are forecasted for today. The Elite Men’s RR 180km race is underway with 65 starters and the course will follow the U23 men’s route from yesterday with an extra 40km loop that is mostly flat. The race begins as with the other categories with a 4km neutralized start and ends with a 2.5 times around the finishing 7km circuit with the a 1.5km climb to the finishline.

20km
The elite men’s peloton has been active from the get-go with perhaps nervous energy as several breaks have made attempts but no one has gotten away as the pack is keeping close tabs on everything. With 160 kms to go there will be many opportunities ahead for riders to stretch their legs.

37km
A strong group of 13 riders has now broken away and has 1:30 on the pack. The break includes many top riders and looks like one that could stick:

– Svein Tuft (BC) Symmetrics
– Dominique Perras (QC) Kelly Benefits Strategy/Medifast
– Jean-François Laroche (QC) Sleeman Clear TATV
– François Parisien (QC) Slipstream
– Mark Walters KodakGallery p/b Sierra Nevada Pro Cycling
– Cameron Evans (BC) Symmetrics
– Ryan Roth (ON) Kelly Benefits Strategy/Medifast
– Bruno Langlois ( QC) Eva-Devinci
– Peter Morse (ON) Jet Fuel Coffee
– Andrew Pinfold (BC) Symmetrics
– Andrew Randell (ON) Symmetrics
– Greg Reain (ON) Calyon / Litespeed
– Dustin MacBurnie (NS) Team Race.com

Several top guns that missed this break such defending champ Dominique Rollin (QC) KodakGallery p/b Sierra Nevada Pro Cycling and Charles Dionne Colavita Olive Oil/Sutter Home are trying to get away and bridge to the leaders.

60km
The break is now up to 2:30 on the main pack and is down to 11 riders as Laroche and Morse have been shed as the leaders are working well together. The main pack is chasing and Symmetrics with four lead riders is trying to contain the pack.

77km
Reain flatted but has quickly recovered and is now at 15 seconds trying to bridge back to the leaders. Pinfold is on the side of the road and has stopped riding for unknown reasons. The gap to main pack is now 3:06.

93km
At just over the half way mark the 10 leaders now have just over 4 minutes on the main pack which is trying to get organized to chase down the leaders. A group of about 10 riders including five Symmetrics riders has jumped ahead of the main pack.

122km
A thunderstorm came as threatened and has now past but it did not result in any change in the situtation as the 10 leaders continue to extend their lead to 5:50. With Symmetrics controlling any breaks there’s little opportunity for the main pack to mount a serious chase of any kind.

146km
The leaders have finished the last big climb on the course and now the break has split up as Tuft and Roth are leading with a 10-15 second lead on Parisien and Langlois who are chasing. Perras, Evans and Randell are behind them as McBurnie, Walter and Reain have been dropped.

160km
With 20km to go Tuft and Roth continue to lead by 10 seconds over the chase group of five that consists of Parisien (2005 Road Champ), Langlois, Perras, Evans and Randell. With 3 out of 7 riders at the front Symmetrics definitely has the upper hand. The main pack is over 7 min back.

175km
The riders are well into the finishing circuit as Tuft and Roth were caught and now Cam Evans has jumped to the front and has a 25-sec lead over Perras and Randell with Tuft, Parisien, Langlois and Roth a 100 metres behind them.
