2007 Tim Hortons Road Nationals — Day 2 Report and Full Results

July 6, 2007 (Saint-Georges de Beauce, QC) — It was the second day of competition at this year’s Tim Hortons National Road Championships and four criterium titles were up for grabs.

Maste Men

Racing got underway early today as the Master Men’s field took to the tight and bumpy course in St. Georges, Quebec. Team tactics proved the order of the day as several strong Quebec squads marked each other in the early going. With the stronger teams working against each other, attacks were quickly brought back and the stage was set for a field sprint. Kevin Davis (ON, Wheels of Bloor) ended up edging Jeff Bostad of Alberta at the line courtesy of a strong finishing kick.

Davis commented on his win saying that he doesn’t normally race against riders from Quebec so he chose to ride a smart race and eschewed any heroics off the front. “Kids these days forget what we’re here for, it’s not who can pull the strongest on the front or look the flashiest in the break. It’s who can get their wheel across the line first.” Mark Dufour (QC, Le Malliot Blue) rounded out the podium in third.

Junior Men

The junior men were the next to take to the streets and the racing was fast from the gun. Frayed nerves and high speeds were evident in the early going, as riders attempted to establish a break. Several found themselves in the unenviable position of picking themselves up off the ground or pulling themselves out of a nearby creek as they came to terms with the tight high-speed corners.

Equipe de Quebec riders were active throughout the race and their hard work was rewarded with both the first and second places on the podium. Guillaume Boivin (Equipe de Quebec) remarked that his team knew they were strong and capable of the win, he was just happy that it turned out to be him. Boivin outsprinted his teammate and breakaway companion Arnaud Papillion (Equipe de Quebec) for the win with Stephane Cossette (QC, EVA-Devinci) taking the field sprint for third.

Women’s Crit

With several strong riders toeing to the line in the women’s race it was anyone’s guess as to who was going to take the win. The riders spent several laps feeling each other out before Ontario’s Merrill Collins (La Biciceletta) went to the front and caused the decisive split. All the big names were present with the break comprising of Collins, Alex Wruebleski (AB, Colavita/Sutter Home) Alison Testroete (BC, Team Expresscopy.com), Joelle Numainville (QC, Team Expresscopy.com) and Laura Yoisten (BC, Webcor).

The break worked well together and distanced themselves from a rapidly splitting field. According to Collins, she worked hard in the early going and tried to ride a smart race. Echoing Kevin Davis’s earlier comments, Collins remarked that the win today wasn’t going to result from heroics but from playing it smart and biding one’s time. As the break exited the final corner Collins was able to hold off a hard charging Wruebleski and Testroete for what she called “The one thing missing from my resume,” – a national championship win.

Elite Men

Capping off a day of exciting racing, the elite men took to the streets for 40 laps of the challenging 1.2 km criterium course. What the peloton may have lacked in quantity, it more then made up for in quality; many of the riders, including eventual fourth place finisher, Ryan Anderson (Trek/Red Truck Racing) commented that this year’s race was notably harder and faster then last.

The racing really got underway when last years champion Cam Evans (BC, Symmetrics) launched an attack that was covered by Charles Dionne (QC, Colavita/Sutter Home). Several riders bridged up including Pan American Champ Martin Gilbert (QC, Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast ) and Zach Bell (BC, Symmetrics).

The break worked well together for several laps until a split was caused and once again Evans and Dionne found themselves alone in front of the field. Strong as the break may have been, it couldn’t hold off a hard-charging peloton and with several laps to go the break was brought back and riders began to set it up for the field sprint.

Symmetrics rode strong at the front to line it up for Bell, but Dionne came up the right side for a brilliant win. Dionne was happy with the victory, saying he had several friends and family there and it was nice to be able to take win for the hometown crowd. Kevin Lacombe (Equipe de Quebec) rode strongly in the final laps and crossed the line for a well-deserved third spot on the podium.
