2007 Tim Hortons Road Nationals — Day 1 Report and Full Results

July 5, 2007 (St. Georges de Beauce, QC) – The opening day of the 2007 Tim Hortons Road National competition was characterized by threatening skies and decisive victories. Danielle Kenny (Team Alberta) and Matt Potma (Cycling BC) stamped their mark on the Junior national time trial championships today in St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec.

The Junior women were the first to tackle the technical 15km TT course on Wednesday morning. Intermittent rain showers transformed the already challenging course into a technical race against the clock where handling skills were often called into play. Kenny, the last rider off due to her second place podium finish last year, rode a stellar TT, turning over a high cadence up the grinding false flats that marked this year’s course. Later she remarked that when she passed her minute woman Team Ontario’s Denise Ramsden (the eventual fourth place finisher) just prior to the turn-around, she knew she was on her way to a good time. Kenny distanced herself from the field by a commanding 1.37 over second place. Second through fourth place were separated by a mere 4 seconds. Silver went to Lindsay Argue (Team Manitoba) and the bronze to Jessica Kisell (Team Alberta).

Western Canada displayed their dominance on the first day of this year’s competition with three of the top four men in the 20km time trial hailing from British Columbia. Matt Potma rode a stellar race, setting himself apart from a large Junior men’s field. Guillaume Boivin (Equipe de Quebec) rode a very solid race to finish 27 seconds back in second place. Boivin is recovering from injuries sustained in a nasty crash during the Mardi Lachine Criterium two weeks ago. Rounding out the podium was Potma’s Cycling BC teammate Cody Campbell.

With 70 entries in this year’s Junior time trial, the future of cycling in Canada looks strong. A notable performance came from Team Ontario’s Andrew Lattimore, a second year Cadet rider who placed seventh overall, ten seconds off the podium against a talented Junior field.
