December 3, 2004 – The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) is proud to present the 2005 provisional calendar of cycling events across the nation. A total of 38 events in 5 disciplines will be presented from May to November. Boosted by the amazing results of our Olympians in Athens, more then 10,000 athletes, from 5 to 65 years old, will participate in national calendar events throughout the season.

The event listed below represent the National Calendar for 2005. The CCA would like to thank all the organizers that applied to be on the National Calendar.

Road
13 events are set on the calendar for 2005. Most of them are sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the international governing body of cycling, including the only road World Cup in North America in Montréal, Québec. Also, the CCA is proud to announced the launch of a new national series with more then $10,000 in cash for Elite men and women. Furthermore, two major Games including cycling events will take place in Canada this year: the Canada Summer Games and the World

Mountain Bike
The mountain bike scene is still well represented with a total of 13 events in 2005, all of them sanctioned by UCI. Canada is a powerhouse of mountain biking: we are ranked #1 in women’s cross-country (XC) and #10 in the men’s XC. Canada will host two World Cup events this year, including its first ever Marathon World Cup, on June 18, in Mont-Sainte-Anne, near Québec City.

BMX

BMX is the newcomer among the cycling disciplines governed under the CCA. This discipline will grow really fast in the next couple of years, now that it is officially an Olympic sport. The debut is set in Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games. Canada will be the host of 2 international events in 2005. At the national level, a Western and an Eastern National series will take place as well. Canada will be the host of the World Championship in 2007.

Track

Although our participation in track racing is small, the success of Lori-Ann Muenzer at the last Olympics shows that we have been able to accomplish a lot with a few riders. Look for the number of track cyclists to increase over the next couple year

Cyclo-Cross
This fall discipline is growing steadily across the country. Attractive to both roadies and mountain bikers, it presents one of the few opportunities to see some of our top athletes compete head-to-head.
