July 18, 2004 -Today’s Delta Road race was run in near perfect cycling conditions.
The women’s race was won by Sarah Uhl and this gave her the Tour of Delta Omnium overall as well.
The men’s race started out very fast. A bad downhill crash marred the opening circuits and took several riders out of the race. In the crosswind section a select group of American pros and top Canadians practiced perfect echelon technique and established a 1 minute lead. The big losers were Italpasta-Transport Belmire who had nobody in the group.
Once the race reached the finishing circuits Italpasta-Transport Belmire began the chase in earnest. Meanwhile Gord Fraser had a mechanical with one of his wheels and was missed by neutral service forcing him to abandon. Eventually most of the break came back leaving three riders out front.
In the last two laps the remaining riders were brought back tantalizingly close to the field but never caught. Tyler Farrar won the race over former teammate Cam Evans and ageless Eric Wohlberg. Farrar also secured the Tour of Delta overall with his win.
