Wood Nabs Sprint Finish in First Stage of Tour de l’Aude

May 14, 2005 — The first stage of the women’s Tour de l’Aude stage race in southern France, 114km in Lezignan, wound up in a sprint finish after the riders faced their first tough climb, the Mouthoumet, at mid-race. Australian Oenone Wood (Nurnberger) outsprinted Germany’s Sarah Durster for the win, but Austrian Christiane Soeder still holds onto her slim 3-second lead in the overall.

Canadians Lyne Bessette, Erinne Willock and Leigh Hobson all finished in the main pack, while Felicia Greer dropped 45 seconds, detached from the main group, and Lisa Sweeney finished in a 25-rider second group, 4:05 down on the leaders.
