Volta a la Comunitat Valencia Stages 4 and 5 Report, Results, Photos – Boivin 8th on Final Stage, Quintana Tops GC

February 06, 2017 (Valenica, Spain) – The Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana concluded on Sunday with Stage 5 from Paterna to Valenica, 130 km, with Canadian Guillaume Boivin of the Israeli Cycling Academy Team finishing eighth as Bryan Coquard (Fra) Direct Engergie too the win. Colombian climber Nairo Quintana (Movistar) won the General Classification ahead of Belgian Ben Hermans (BMC) and Italian Manuel Senni (BMC).

The final stage was shortened due to high winds, resulting in the hard category 3 climb of Alto Del Coronet being removed. Quintana took hold of the race lead on Stage 4 as racers battled over four categorized climb before making the final category 1 climb up the Mas de la Costa to the finish.

Quintana attacked the final climb, riding through several riders up the road before shaking his chasers. He crossed the line sole, 40 seconds ahead of Eritrean Merhawi Kudus (Dimension Data) and 45 seconds ahead of Amaro Manuel Antunes of W52-FC Proto-Porto Canal (Protugal).

The top Canadian on Stage 4 was Antoine Duchesne of Direct Energie, finishing at 5:40 behind Quintana. Volta a la Comunitat Valencia marks the first major climbing test for Quintana ahead of the upcoming Grand Tours, and so far he looks on track to be a contender.
