Volkswagen Unveils Cargo e-bike – First Electric Bike as Part of Sustainable Mobility Solutions

September 22, 2018 (Hannover, GER) – Automotive giant, Volkswagen, unveiled a Cargo e-Bike, it’s first electric bike, as part of series of new commercial all-electric vehicles on display at the 69th annual IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hannover, Sept. 20-27, as part of its solution for sustainable mobility.

The three-wheel Cargo e-Bike can carry up to 210 kg – including the driver – and can handle a cargo volume of one-half cubic metre. Equipped with a 250-watt mid-mounted motor with an automatic gearbox, it has a small turning circle and innovative tilt-compensating technology which always keeps the load platform horizontal.

“Our Cargo e-Bike brings together all of the known usage and ride properties to make a perfect product,” said Dr. Thomas Sedran, Chairman of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Brand’s Board of Management. “In the tradition of Volkswagen to be one step ahead, we are just now working on solutions for the challenges of tomorrow, think ahead about sustainable mobility for our customers and for better air quality in our cities.”

The Cargo e-Bike was developed in cooperation with VWCV’s strategic partner ABT. Volkswagen also introduced the I.D. BUZZ CARGO van, e-Crafter HyMotion concept van and an e-Cabby to demonstrate how Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is launching into the new era of electric mobility.

Volkswagen AG is owned by Pon Holdings, one of the biggest family-owned businesses in the Netherlands, which also owns Cervelo, Santa Cruz, Gazelle, Focus, Univega, Kalkhoff and more in its Pon.Bike Group division. Gazelle presented their cargo e-bike, the D10, at the show as well.
