September 30, 2013 (Albion Hills – Caledon ON) – The University Cup (U-Cup) is a grassroots mountain bike race series with the goal of welcoming new and experienced student athletes to the sport of varsity level cross country mountain bike racing.

This past weekend Katlyn Dundas won gold in the Women’s “A” (expert) Division at University Cup Race #3 (of a 4 race series). This was the first time in U-Cup history that a gold medal was awarded to a student from Brock University. This historic accomplishment was acknowledged by Brock University’s Director of Athletics. Many schools now have mountain bike teams and clubs who participate in the series.

On the men’s side the big story was Peter Disera. He may be a rookie on the University of Guelph Cycling Team but his mountain biking strength showed veterans from all schools that he means business. The already impressive University of Guelph Cycling Team got a whole lot stronger with the addition of this first year student who recently returned from the World Junior Championships with a silver medal around his neck.

His premier University Cup race took place along the well groomed trails of Albion Hills. He and his teammates were joined by university and college student athletes from across the province.

In the sport division, Dmytro Muyava won the men’s race. The gold medal was awarded to Daniel (“Rookie Dan”) O’Keefe as Dmytro raced as alumni. In the Woman’s “B” division race, Nichola Bendle from Queen’s university powered her way to the top of the podium.

The next University Cup race is Sunday October 6th at Ganaraska Forest. New racers are welcome.
Registration is “day-of” and starts at 9:30 am. “A” race at 11am, “B” race at 1pm.
