Kulhavy Wins Elite Men’s XCO @ UCI MTB World Cup XC #1 in NoveMesto – Zandstra 23rd

May 24, 2015 (Nove Mesto CZE) – Jaroslav Kulhavy (Cze) Specialized Racing secured his first WCup victory today on home turf, since winning Olympic gold in 2012, in another epic battle against Nino Schurter (Sui) Scott-Odlo MTB Racing Team in the Elite Men’s 23km XCO that featured a 2.5km start loop and 6 laps of a 4.1km course.

Julien Absalon (Fra) BMC Mountainbike Racing Team claimed third with Florian Vogel (Sui) Focus XC Team 4th and Mathias Fluckiger (Sui) Stoeckli Pro Team in 5th. The top Canadian was Derek Zandstra (Can) Scott-3ROX Racing in 23rd.

Kulhavy and Schurter escaped on the first lap and never looked back exchanging the lead many times as both faltered at various times but recovered quickly. On the final lap Kulhavy attacked on the final big climb and gapped Schurter growing his lead to 24s at the finish. The win at home, on the 2016 MTB Worlds course, was confirmation that Kulhavy is back after last season’s health issues and lacklustre results since his big Olympic victory.
