UCI Canadian Open BMX Project – Race Report

by Brendan Arnold/OCA

May 23, 2010 (Abbotsford, BC) – This year’s UCI National was held on Saturday in Abbotsford, BC. The new track here is fast, technical and very exciting. Adam Muys from Cycling BC built the track with one thing in mind…. progressing the sport of BMX and Team Ontario had nothing but rave reviews.

Elite Men – Jimmy Brown from Alberta dominated the Elite Men’s class all day. Jimmy recently coming back from a broken ankle is showing signs of returning to form and dominated all of the motos and the final. Pat Lebel from AB and Mischa Partridge, BC had a great battle for second only for Mischa to miss the third pro jump and have Pat go by for the second place

Elite Women – With only a hand full of Juniors in attendance the decision was made to combine the Elite and Junior Women. BC’S Rosemary Adams and Alberta’s Sabrina Millman both looked quick with Team Ontario’s Junior, Amelia Walsh qualifying third for the main event. When the gate dropped it was 8 wide down the hill when BC’S Layne Nyhaug and Ontario’s Amelia Walsh rubbed bars and both went down creating some space on the track for Adams to take the win.

Junior Men – BC’s Tory Nyhaug dominated from start to finish. Tory had some good legs today and went wire to wire with some really strong first straight power and handling the pro sections with total ease. Connor McCormack from BC rode strong to take the second and is looking to find himself and spot on this year’s world’s team to South Africa.
