Tour of Missouri – Stage 4 Report, Full Results, Photos – Interview with Winner Michael Barry

September 11, 2008 (Rolla, Missouri) – Canada’s Michael Barry brought Team Columbia their third stage victory of the 2008 Tour of Missouri, winning Stage 4 which rolled into the town of Rolla today. Barry completed the two finishing circuits of the stage on his own after going clear with approximately 11km to go.

“You never really know if you’ve won until you cross the finish line,” an exhausted, but elated Barry said after the stage. “But when the gap was holding at one minute with 6km to go, I felt pretty sure I was going to win.”

Barry and his teammates were aggressive throughout the stage and from the gun high speeds were the order of the day on the 152km/95 miles from Lebanon to Rolla. The peloton broke apart several times, on one occasion due to a crash about 72km/45 miles into the race.

Team Symmetrics also saw a bit of pavement today with Will Routely going down just after Canadian rider Dominique Rollin secured his second batch of King of the Mountains points for the day. Routely unfortunately had to abandon the stage, which later saw two more of his teammates hit the deck along with Kelly Benefits rider Johnny Sundt.

“The guys are OK,” said Symmetrics’ Team Manager Kevin Field. “Ryan Anderson was a bit banged up, but Pinfold only got stopped behind him.”

With the peloton running out of road 18 riders, including Columbia’s 2nd place man on GC Michael Rogers (Aus), slowly built a gap on the main field. But with Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Chipotle) in yellow and Svein Tuft (Symmetrics) in third place also in that break, it seemed unlikely that they would be brought back.

Not too much later Canada’s Barry leapt off the front of that lead group along with Jeff Louder (BMC), Andy Bajadali (Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast), and Richard Faltus (Team Sparkasse).

That mini-move would turn into the winning move of the day with the four riders then splitting into two groups of two. Louder who won the Tour of Utah, and figured into the final moments of this year’s US Pro Championships in Greenville, South Carolina a few weeks ago went away with Barry. Barry and Louder cooperated with one another towards the finish until Barry left his companion behind him.

By soaking up the maximum amount of KoM points available on the road during today’s stage, Rollin increased his hold on that jersey. Canada’s Team Symmetrics meanwhile will continue to protect Tuft’s third place position.

“Svein got a few bonus seconds out there,” Fields said later, “So our main objective is still to take care of Svein. If anything else comes out of that”¦great, but that’s our main priority.”

Going forward into the remaining three days of racing, Garmin will be closely guarding Vande Velde’s lead from Columbia’s Rogers who was only able to make up a few seconds on the American rider. While’s it unlikely that Garmin will make an error at this point in the race, nothing is particularly certain with the amount of rolling terrain that lies ahead of the riders.

Post-stage Interview with Michael Barry

You guys seem to throw everything possible at the Garmin guys. What was the strategy today?
Michael Barry: Michael Rogers is so close to the lead, and so is George (Hincapie), so our main goal was to isolate Christian (Vande Velde) so that either George or Michael could attack him into the finale. We wanted to make the race really hard on them, and that plays in our favor.

There seemed to be a lot of discussion between you and Jeff Louder before you went away on your own. What was being said?
MB: I couldn’t really pull with him, because he was ahead on GC. He wanted me to work with him so he could move up (in the standings), but I had to tell him that I couldn’t do that.

Going forward, do you think your team still has a shot at the win?
MB: We didn’t get the race lead today, but we made the race really hard and (Garmin) and the other teams are going to feel that for sure tomorrow.
