Tour of Langkawi – Stage 9

February 11, 2006 — Today’s 16.2-Km individual time trial was the last chance for any of the GC contenders to improve their position, in this surprise-laden 2006 race. With all of the mountains behind them, the riders took to the pan-flat course in hopes of upsetting the leader board and putting their mark on the event. With only 23-seconds separating 2nd through 5th places, the pressure was hot.

Navigators’ new recruit Bernard Van Ulden came close with another stellar ride, just missing the podium by a scant 5-seconds after spending an hour at the top of the leader board as the early best-time. As expected, at day’s end the top positions were taken by time trial specialists, with the winner, Sergiy Matveyev (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare), the only rider to go under 20-minutes. In the GC race, Navigators’ Cesar Grajales improved his position by one spot to move up into 4th Overall. Teammate Mark Walters also improved his position by one spot, putting him in 12th in the Overall standings.

Tomorrow’s 56-Km final stage in Kuala Lumpur shouldn’t see any changes in the classifications, but, with all of the surprises that have occurred in the past 9-days, anything can happen.
