April 03, 2016 (Oudenaarde, BEL) – Peter Sagan (Svk) Tinkoff Team soloed to victory following a bold attack that stuck to claim the 100th edition of the Tour of Flanders from Brugge to Oudenaarde, 255km. The reigning World Champ denied Fabian Cancellara (Sui) Trek-Segafredo a record fourth victory as he and Sep Vanmarcke (Bel) Team LottoNl-Jumbo attacked a lead group of eight riders as Cancellara tried to close the gap in vein.

Sagan dropped Vanmarcke with about 13km to go as Cancellara bridged to the Belgian but Sagan was too strong and could not be reeled in savouring the first Monument win of his career. He dedicated the victory to pro peloton riders, Antoine Demoitié and Daan Myngheer, who died recently and his teammate Maciej Bodnar was injured while training.

The race was marred by several crashes that took out favourites like Greg Van Avermaet (Bel) BMC. Meanwhile Canadian fans were stoked to see Canada’s Hugo Houle (AG2R La Mondiale) as one six riders who managed to break away at the 70km mark.

Joining Houle were Federico Zurlo (Lampre-Merida), Imanol Erviti (Movistar), Lukas Postlberger (Bora-Argon 18), Gijs Van Hoecke (Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise) and Wesley Kreder (Roompot Oranje Peloton).

“It’s always fun like feeling to be in the breakaway especially the Tour of Flanders is the biggest race in Belgium. There was quite a crowd! I am pleased to forward despite the pain. I got whipped by others in the break,” said Houle, 25, who ended up crossing the finish line in 111th. “It was my goal as everyone wants to be in the break so it was a fight to make it.”

The brutal race saw the break whittled down as all but two escapees were reeled in as a new lead group formed but it too was absorbed until Sagan and seven other riders including Vanmarcke and Michal Kwiatkowski (Pol) Team Sky formed a gap that Sagan would take to victory.
