Tour of California Stage 2 Report, Full Results, Photos – Lancaster Wins, Parisen 6th, Hesjedal 8th More Photos

May 17, 2010 (Santa Rosa, CA) – In contrast to yesterday’s sunny and dry first day of racing Stage two’s soggy mire was a sober reminder of how fickle Mother Nature can be. But that didn’t stop Aussie Brett Lancaster (Cervelo) from charging to the line for the win, his first stage victory since his won the Prologue at the Tour of Germany.

And it was a good day for the Maple Leaf with two riders in the top ten as Canada’s Francois Parisien (SpiderTech p/b Planet Energy) claimed 6th while Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Transitions) grabbed 8th and sits 10th overall.

Out on the course the rain kept up at a slow pace today, and as expected, a breakaway began early. This year’s second stage was harder and steeper course than last year and with the rain no one expected much from the top GC contenders save keeping them safe for another day of racing.

Yet the drizzle in Santa Rosa didn’t turn back the Cali crowds chanting for their hometown boy, Levi [Leiphemer], who came in with the leaders, happy for his performance and team. “It was really cold today out there and I’m just glad my team stayed intact and kept their heads on and we’re firmly in the mix – I’m happy with my performance today. Can’t wait for the sun to return tomorrow though, it’s the hardest Tour of California yet and I need to keep my energy level high.”

With over 10,000 ft of climbing amidst soggy streets the peloton played it safe cruising at only 22mph with tough verticals and descents on the Oakville and Trinity grades. Johan Bruneeyl, Team Director of Radioshack, commented: “I saw at least ten crashes from many of the non-GC riders, they were getting dropped so they had to take more chances to get back into the race – it was so dangerous descending, even our car was sliding out.”

The attacks came quickly today with Jay Thomson (VAU), Thomas Rabou (TT1), Karl Menzies (UHC), Michael Friedman (JBC) and Canada’s Andrew Randell (SpiderTech) riding away to create a gap hovering around the 4-minute mark. Leipheimer and team mate Lance Armstrong (Radioshack) along with George Hincapie (BMC) led a chase group of 12 which quickly grew to over 20 after the Oakville descent closing the gap to 3:08 as yesterday’s 2nd place finisher and winner here four years ago, JJ Haedo (Saxo Bank), went down while descending. By mile 96/153km and after the KOMs were decided, Leipheimer’s chase group of mostly Radioshack and BMC riders gobbled up the break forming a 27-man lead group.

The contest came down to the last 200 meters as five riders jumped hard under the Third Street bridge earning a gap as they dueled it out with Lancaster putting on the heat in the last 20 meters besting Sagan, Boom and Rory Sutherland with Parisien in 6th, Levi in seventh, and Hesjedal right behind him in 8th. The time for all 27 riders was neutralized to prevent a repeat of yesterday’s crashes.

At the post-race press conference Lancaster commented, “I wasn’t thinking about winning the stage today, as I was suffering from yesterday…but as I can descend quite well I got the chance.”

Thomas Rabou of Team Type 1, the KOM leader, talked about his chances of keeping the jersey until the end: “The 6th stage will be the tough one, as it starts going up and I’ll need to get points early. I’m going to need to get points every day before then as there will not be any breakaways for most of the race. I don’t think I’ll get much help from outside of the team so I’ll have to create my own chances.”

Yesterday’s winner, Mark Cavendish (Gbr ) HTC-Columbia played it safe staying cocooned all race, off the back with Tony Martin and Matti Breschel, saving his energy.

On Tuesday, stage 3 begins on Ocean Beach in San Francisco rolling through hills towards a fast flat finish at the Santa Cruz boardwalk.
