September 02, 2014 (Calgary, AB) – The Netherland’s Tom Dumoulin, racing for Team Giant-Shimano, lived up to his billing as race favorite, by convincingly winning the opening Subway® Prologue at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park in Calgary Tuesday night.

The 23-year-old is the national time trial champion in his cycling-crazy country of Holland. Dumoulin showed his skills in the Tuesday’s race against the clock, winning by 14 seconds over Romania’s Serghei Tvetcov of Jelly-Belly p/n Maxxis and 17 seconds over American Tom Danielson of Garmin-Sharp.

“I knew I could do a good race here,” Dumoulin said, who recently won two stages at the Eneco Tour, a major race in Europe. “It was a difficult prologue. You had to gauge your effort on the flats as well as the on the climb. And, coming from sea level, the altitude was a bit of a factor at 1,200m.”

Danielson and Tvetcov are coming off great performances in Colorado at the USA Pro Challenge only 10 days ago, finishing 2nd and 3rd overall respectively, were far outdistanced by Dumoulin. Danielson had predicted at Monday’s press conference that Dumoulin would be the man to beat. Entering today’s hilly circuit race in Lethbridge, Dumoulin said: “The 14 second lead is more than I could hope for. It is a great position to be in.”

The 2013 Canadian champion Zach Bell of Team SmartStop posted the fastest time for his country and is in 8th place overall. Christian Meier of Sussex, NB (Team Orica-GreenEDGE) finished just behind Bell in ninth position while Ryan Roth of Cambridge, ON (Silber Pro Cycling) was tenth.

“I picked up cycling in Calgary, so I am pretty familiar with the area. I am happy with how the race went. I’m with some pretty good company up there, so this is a good start for Team SmartStop, and I believe we can follow it up over the next few days,” said Bell. “The Canadian guys were pretty hungry for this race. The guys around me (in the top 10) are good buddies. This course was laid out in order to give us some pretty good opportunities.”

Interview with Zach Bell

Jordan Cheyne of Belleville, ON was the fastest on the Canadian National Team posting a time of 6:35. The rider from the Russ Hays Cycling Team based in Victoria currently sits 29th in the general classification.

Professional cyclist Hugo Houle of Ste-Perpétue, QC, from WorldTour Team AG2R La Mondiale, is pleased to see progress as he comes back from health issues.

“I was feeling really good. I’ve had stomach problems for the last two weeks, and today I didn’t feel any pain, which is very positive. I gave everything I had for the prologue today, but there was still a little something missing to make the difference,” said Houle, after the race.

“The climb was slightly difficult, of course, because you arrive at the base already exhausted. The weather was quite cold, so it was difficult for the lungs. The suffering came mostly from the respiration than the legs.”
