June 18, 2016 (Quebec City, Que.) – Two Canucks were on the podium at the 70km Stage 4 Criterium in Quebec City on Saturday as Pierrick Naud (Rally Cycling) took second and Benjamin Perry (Silber Pro Cycling) finished 3rd. Mikhel Raim (Est) Cycling Academy Team grabbed his second stage victory while Hugo Houle (Can) Team Canada was 6th with race leader Gregory Daniel (USA) Axeon Hagens Berman finishing 8th with the same time.

“I did not know what the plan was,” said the rider who wore the yellow jersey for a day on Stage 2. “It was really hard but the crowd helped us.” On this occasion, Raim donned the blue jersey as the winner of the Quebec City stage.

The pace was fast from the start and an early break of five riders swelled to 20 but it was caught by the half way mark. Soon after a group of five jumped led by Raim. The escapees soon had a minute over the chasing pack with 10 to go. Canada’s David Boily (Garneau Quebecor) and Aussie Angus Morton (Jelly Belly) were also in the break.

As the finish line approached and Morton threatening Robin Carpenter (USA) Holowesko / Citadel P/B Hincapie Sportwear in third overall his team upped the pace to limit the damage.

In the end the break held off the chasing peloton as Perry, the reigning Canadian Crit champ, charged the final uphill sprint with Naud surging near the end but Raim proved to have better legs taking the win in 1:36:38.

“I really wanted to win but I hesitated for a second, and he edged me at the line,” said Naud, also a crit specialist, as Perry took third. Morton was 4th and Boily finished 5th.

Houle led the peloton across the line in 6th at 18s back and has his work cut out on Sunday as Daniel and his Axeon Hagens Bermant team seem to able defenders. He retains the yellow GC jersey, the white Points jersey and the red Best Young Rider jersey.

Due to an error in the Technical Guide, as last evening’s Crit was considered a “half stage”, the UCI approved time bonuses of 6-4-2 instead of 10-6-4. According to Guy Napert-Frenette, Cycling Canada Communications, the Chief Commissaire made the changes this morning and while the adjustment gave Houle two seconds in the overall, he still has to find 16s to capture the fabled yellow jersey at Canada’s oldest stage race.

Meanwhile Perry finally delivered a podium to powerhouse Silber Pro Cycling, shut out until now at this year’s Beauce, and he may do it again on tomorrow’s final stage which he won at last year’s Tour.

After a perfect week without a drop of rain, the final stage in the streets of St. George beings at 11am for 12 laps of racing, totalling 122.4km. The new champion of the 31st Tour de Beauce should be crowned about three hours later – Stage 4 results below.
