June 14, 2005 (Saint Georges, Quebec) — Stage 1 of the 20th anniversary edition of the Tour de Beauce Bell got underway this morning at 10 am under a light rain, with 96 riders coming to the line in the southern Beauce region. A total of fifteen teams including squads from Canada, Québec, Poland, Australia, Germany, and the United States are competing in this 7-stage race which begins today and ends on June 19th. Surprisingly, newly crowned American USPRO champ, Chris Wherry, and Canada’s speedster Gord Fraser, both with Health Net were not present at the line.
Charles Dionne of Saint Redempteur, Quebec riding for Team Canada is considered one of Canada’s best bets for a collection of podiums; a sentiment shared by the rider himself, “My objectives are stage wins; and if I can, certainly a victory in the general classification. Beauce doesn’t have huge mountains like in the Canadian West, but make no mistake, its very difficult. I hope to do well, and to continue to have good results,” he added.
The pack was lively early in the 169 km race with a breakaway of three riders – Jean-Sébastien Béland (Équipe du Québec), Tomasz Lesniak (Paged-MBK-Scout) and Jiri Pospisil (Stevens Racing) – after just 23 kilometres. The tiny group maintained their lead that ranged from 2-3 minutes until Lesniak fell back to the pack just outside Armstrong, Québec.
After two hours of racing, an attack of six – Mike Jones (Health Net), Nathan O’Neil (Navigators), Przemyslaw Mikolajczyk (Paged MBK scout), Brandon Crichton (Italpasta Transports Belmire), Cory Lange (Symmetrics) and Alexandre Lavallée (Volkswagen Trek) – caught the escapées; finishing the job that Health Net’s Ivan Dominguez had started but abandoned.
An hour later it was once again Volkswagen Trek’s turn to play, sending out Alexandre Cloutier. In turn, a group of about 11 riders including 2003 Tour de Beauce winner John Lieswyn (Health Net) decided to pursue Cloutier; the peloton remained behind at 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Cloutier was caught shortly thereafter and the group stayed one minute in front of the peloton.
The breakaway group of riders kept their lead over the peloton but another two riders, Domenicio Passuello (Amore & Vita – Beretta) and Glen Alan Chadwick (CyclingNews.com-Fondriest) made a sucessful last-minute bid to join the escapées.
At 2:25 pm Stage 1 came to a close in Saint Georges de Beauce with a sprint finish as Martin Gilbert (Volkswagen Trek) bested Dominique Rollin (Équipe du Québec) who took second, followed by Domenicio Passuello (Amore & Vita – Beretta) in third.
