The Cyclery-4iiii Team’s Bonhomme Wins New Raritan Crit at Tour of Somerville – 2 Podiums in 2 States

June 01, 2017 (New Jersey, NY) – Memorial Weekend in the USA always seems to involve a lot of great racing opportunities and this year saw most of the team head down to New Jersey for a 3-race criterium series finishing with oldest bike race in North America- the Tour of Somerville.

Cath Ouellette had already made plans to attend the Killington Stage race and flew the team banner solo in Vermont.  She picked up a 3rd on the 1st stage and finished a strong 5th on GC in this great (and hilly) stage race.

Back in New Jersey the rest of the team opened the weekend racing the Bound Brook Criterium- a technical circuit with a chicane on the homestretch.  Despite solid attacks all race it stayed together for a field sprint with the always improving Sara Giovennetti coming in a strong 5th place behind winner, and American Cycling Legend Laura Van Gilder (and we don’t use legend lightly around here- the woman has won over 200 professional cirteriums over a long and storied career).

On day two the team raced on a new circuit in Raritan, which by all accounts was even more technical than Bound Brook.  Despite it raining all morning the team came ready to play- and this time when it came down to a field sprint the team took control with 5 laps to go.  With  2 laps to go Kinley Gibson throttled the front in what she called “a junior women’s pursuit” and didn’t give up the front until Emily Flynn and Arianne Bonhomme came flying past on the last lap.  Bonhomme took the sprint over the ageless Van Gilder while Flynn finished 4th.  A huge result for both Bonhomme and the team and an awesome product of some pretty awesome team work!

Memorial Day Monday saw the team line up for the oldest bike race in North America- ‘The Kentucky Derby of Cycling” the Tour of Somerville.  Held on a 1.2 mile four corner course Somerville is an open dragway of a race course- hard for breakaways to escape on, and infamously hard to gauge the sprint right on the long drag to the finish.  Racing to honour Ellen, the girls were aggressive all day long, raking up primes and constantly featuring off the front of the bike race.  With no other team willing to roll the dive in breakaways, the race seemed doomed for a fieldsprint.  With three to go the team took control of the race and set up the train.  Fortune was not in their favour as the train came just short on the last lap and the team was swamped- setting the stage for Van Gilder to win her 4th Tour of Somerville and 1st in over 12 years!

While the team might have come up short their aggression honored the memory and racing style of Ellen and they learned a lot from leading out at one of America’s most famous races.

FUN FACT: Ten years ago team DS Jenny Trew finished 3rd in a ninety rider women’s field at the Tour of Somerville.
