August 7, 2007 – Team Escape Velocity is proud to host the first annual World Tuesday Night Championships Community Night at the University of British Columbia’s Thunderbird Stadium tonight, August 7, 2007.
This evening’s events will include a fun kid’s bicycle “roadeo” that will emphasize bicycle safety, handling skills and safe cycling in traffic. Escape Velocity will also hold the regular Tuesday Night races and have representatives on hand to explain the discipline of bicycle road racing to interested members of the community.
“We have a great bicycle roadeo course planned for the kids,” Paul Needham, Team Escape Velocity volunteer said. “The RCMP and Ambulance Paramedics of BC will also be on hand to assist with the roadeo and reinforce helmet use and safe bicycling techniques with the kids.”
Escape Velocity organizes close to 30 races throughout the year, and the World Tuesday Night Championships (WTNC) is likely the best attended cycling event in Western Canada. The WTNC series consists of road races held on a short circuit around UBC’s Thunderbird stadium Tuesday evening during the summer months, weather permitting. Race categories vary from novices to experts and professionals, including separate races for women. Although intended to be training races, competition in these races is intense and turnouts of close to 200 cyclists are not uncommon on a warm summer evening.
“We have received great encouragement and support for holding this event from community partners, such as the University Neighborhoods Association and UBC Daycare,” Tobin Copley Team Escape Velocity Board of Directors member added. “There will also be several members of Escape Velocity’s youth development program (dEVo) and dEVo BMX at the community evening so local kids and adults can have first hand exposure to our youth programs.”
Team Escape Velocity would like to thank club sponsors Louis Garneau, Powerbar and La Bicicletta for supporting this event and providing prizes for the evening’s events.
