SUPPORT the Hamilton Velodrome at Hamilton Council Meeting on Sept. 13

September 12, 2011 – Dear Supporters of the Hamilton Velodrome, Hamilton City Council will be meeting on Tuesday, September 13th, at Hamilton City Hall to make important decisions on whether or not Hamilton will be the home to an international standard indoor velodrome.  City Hall is located at 71 Main Street West, Hamilton, Ontario.

This opportunity for Hamilton and for the Canadian cycling community is HUGE!!  In fact the potential for Hamilton to become the home of an indoor international standard velodrome (the only other one in North America, outside of Los Angeles), is probably the most significant advancement for the sport in over 40 years.

Over the past weeks, a number of councillors have noted that there does not seem to be much support for the velodrome from the local cycling community, because the gallery seats in the Council Chambers have been mostly empty whenever Council is discussing the Velodrome.

We need to show Council that there IS support for the Velodrome and that there are lots of people who will use this facility when it comes to Hamilton.

The City Council meeting will be starting at 9:30am and will likely run the entire day.

What we would like to see are as many cyclists as possible down to City Hall making your presence felt by Council.

Wear a cycling T-Shirt, a cycling cap or your favorite cycling jersey.

Bring your parents, brothers, sisters, relatives, and friends.  This is an opportunity to engage in an important civic process.

You don’t need to stay the whole day. Come during your lunch hour. Come for a part of the day.

If you are able to attend, you will be joining:

STEVE BAUER – Olympic Silver Medalist and wearer of the Yellow Jersey for 14 days in the Tour de France.

CURT HARNETT – Three-time Olympic Medal Winner and World Record Holder.

GORD SINGLETON – World Champion, Pan Am Games Champion, Commonwealth Games Champion, 3-time World Record Holder, and Order of Canada.

Come and support the velodrome. City Councillors need to see you there. They need to know that there are young people aspiring to be World and Olympic Champions right here in Hamilton and throughout Ontario. They need to see young people and their parents making the effort to support the velodrome.

If you need more information, please feel free to contact me at the number or email address below.

Thank you for supporting the velodrome.

I hope to see a bunch of you out at Hamilton City Hall on Tuesday!!!

Please forward this message to all cyclists you know.  And follow the #HamiltonVelodrome on Twitter @HamiltonVelo and on Facebook HERE.

I can’t attend because I’m out of country but I would suggest that the spokesmen for us, the cycling community, namely Steve, Curt and Gord, have a less expensive proposal to put forward.

Joselyn Lovell tried during a booming economy but could not get the project done so we have to use a different approach.

The biggest cost is the building. See if there is an existing large enough building for sale in the area that can used (retrofitted) to house the track that can save the project millions. Look for local builders to construct the velodrome (people who constructed the London Track) to also save even more millions. Propose a volunteer project that would involve the cycling community to give free time painting, welding, assembling etc. to also cut costs dramatically.

You really want a track built than let’s be realistic and make it affordable and let’s get this velodrome finally a reality in the Toronto/Hamilton area because grandeous, expensive, schemes are NOT going to fly.
