June 18, 2009 (Sun Peaks, BC) – Sun Peaks is gearing up for a big party to welcome summer and kick off the season at the resort. The annual Canada Day Celebrations at Sun Peaks are June 27 and 28, with a running race, beer sampling, live entertainment and the opening of the Sunburst Chairlift.

A four-season resort destination, Sun Peaks has had a fun-filled spring on the golf course and in canoes and kayaks on nearby lakes. With the opening of the Sunburst Chairlift on Saturday, June 27, a whole other realm of outdoor adventures begins. Hike through the alpine and enjoy colourful wildflowers and spectacular views of area mountain ranges, ride through the Sun Peaks Bike Park and feel the adrenaline as you fly through the trees.

The Sun Peaks village will be alive with a multitude of activities and events throughout the weekend, all kicking off with the 8th annual Jo’s Road Race. The fun and festive 5km or 10km loop gives participants gorgeous views of the golf course, McGillivray Creek and the picturesque covered bridge.

After working up a sweat in Jo’s Road Race, grab a glass and wander through the village sampling brews and tasty dishes. The 2nd annual Mountain of Beer Festival and Chili Cook-off has returned by popular demand. Sample signature beers from a variety of breweries, and chili from local chefs. You be the judge! Fill out a ballot for your favourites and gather in the Village for the awards later in the afternoon to see who won. Participants must be 19 years or older. Cost: $25.00 per person. The village will be alive all weekend with the Vancouver Aquarium AquaVan, BC Wildlife Park’s Zoomobile, Magic and Entertainment by James Johnson, a rock climbing wall, face painting, and live music from Canadian Idol contestant Paul Filek!

The Sun Peaks & Region Farmers’ Market also kicks off on Sunday, June 28 with the first market of the summer. The Farmers’ Market will be in the heart of the village every Sunday this summer from 10am to 2pm. Shop for fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and seafood, and crafts from local artisans.
