Sea Otter Classic – Short Track Preview

April 18, 2009 (Monterey, CA) – The Sea Otter Classic Pro Short Track kicks off in a couple of hours on this sunny, yet breezy Saturday, starting with the women’s category at 2:30 pm PST. There are 28 women on the start list, including seven Canadians. Last year’s winner, Lea Davison (USA) Maxxis-Rocky Mountain is not present, but 2008 third-place rider Kelli Emmett (USA) Giant will be on hand, as well as powerhouse Team Luna, who will be expected to dominate. Georgia Gould (USA) Luna and Katerina Nash (Cze) Luna are likely to be vying for the win in the 20-minute plus three-lap race, on the rough, open, windy course. Wendy Simms (Can) Kona is always a contender, as well as Emily Batty (Can) Trek Store. Mical Dyck (Can) Trek Store may be a dark horse.

The 73-man Pro Men’s field starts at 3:15 pm PST. There are 13 Canucks on the start list, including Max Plaxton (Can) Sho-Air Specialized and Seamus McGrath (Can) Jamis. Other heavy hitters, expected to make podium appearances are Ryan Trebon (USA) Kona, Christoph Sauser (Sui) Specialized, Todd Wells (USA) Specialized, and Sam Schultz (USA) Subaru-Gary Fisher. The men are also doing 20 minutes plus three laps.
