Sea Otter 2006 – Pro Men\’s XC – MTB Stage #4 Final Report

April 10, 2006 (Monterey, CA) – The pro men also rode the challenging 30-kilometre loop twice, but their Sea Otter cross-country race, the fourth and final leg of the MTB Stage Race, unfolded quite differently from the women’s event. A charging Aussie Chris Jongewaard (AUS, Australian National Team) set a driving pace off the start, with teammates Liam Killeen (GBR, Specialized) and Alban Lakata (AUT, Specialized) sticking with him. A chase group of around eight riders formed behind, while the Specialized teammates worked together. Jongewaard couldn’t maintain the pace he had helped set and cracked on the second lap, falling back to 12th. Killeen and Lakata never let up and finished one-two, followed by overall GC winner Jean-Christophe Peraud (FRA, Orbea) in third.

Canadians Geoff Kabush (CAN, Maxxis) and Max Plaxton (CAN, Rocky Mountain-Business Objects) made it into the top 10, with ninth and 10th place, respectively. Matt Martindill (CAN, Independent) pulled into 14th, Kris Sneddon (CAN, Kona-Les Gets) was 16th, Mathieu Toulouse (CAN, Maxxis) rolled across the line 17th, Troy Misseghers (CAN, Mountain Bike City) was 19th and Roddi Lega (CAN, Norco) finished 25th.

The challenging course, new for 2006, was made even more difficult by
rain that started on race day. The generally sandy ground drained
relatively well, but a long, wet winter meant some sections were
already saturated. Things got slick and slippery. The new course
included all of the features the Sea Otter cross country is famous
for, including short, steep climbs, rocky, sandy singletrack, tight
treed sections and scenic open fields.
