Santos Tour Down Under Stage 6 Final Report, Full Results, Photos – Gerrans Wins Overall, Canada’s Boivin 90th

by pedalmag.com

January 26, 2014 (Adelaide, Australia) – André Greipel (Ger) Lotto Belisol took the final 85.5km Stage 6 sprint in Adelaide as Simon Gerrans (Aus) Orica GreenEdge won his 3rd Santos Tour Down Under title. Greipel’s Lotto-Belisol teammates took him all the way to the final turn before he broke free and sprinted towards the line ahead of Omega Pharma – Quick-Step’s Mark Renshaw (Aus) in second and Andrew Fenn (Gbr) in third. Working for his teammates Canada’s Guillaume Boivin (Cannondale) finished 126th on the day and 90th overall.

Heading into today’s Be Safe Be Seen MAC Stage 6, Gerrans had a 1-second lead ahead of Cadel Evans (Aus) BMC Racing Team. But by the end of the day, that lead had extended to 5 seconds thanks to some brilliant team riding from Orica GreenEdge. Gerrans’ teammates worked extremely hard all day to ensure he remained safely at the front of the peloton, preventing any unexpected attacks.

“The guys did a fantastic job,” said Gerrans. “They kept me right at the front and out of trouble, so it worked out beautifully. It’s a huge honour to win the Tour Down Under. For it to be on Australia Day and racing for an Australia team, it just doesn’t get much better.”

“I guess today’s win is a combination of relief and excitement,” added Gerrans. “It’s a big thrill to have won for a third time. But it’s also a relief because there was a huge amount of expectation on the team this time. So it’s great to finish off with a win, and to back that up and win all these other classifications is just a massive thrill.”

This result gives Gerrans his third Santos Tour Down Under title, putting him into the record books as the only rider to have won the event three times – in 2006, 2012 and now 2014.

Meanwhile, at the Santos Women’s Cup 2014 it was Shara Gillow (Aus) Orica GreenEdge soloing to win the final stage as teammate Loes Gunnewijk (Ned) took the overall GC win.
