December 10, 2008 – Former Sask Cycling Technical Director (1986), Owen Spence, tragically died Saturday in a fall at his home in Kamloops. Owen was also a member of the 1983 Western Can Games Team and won the Wotton Bowl in 1985. Read the Leader Post article here.

April 26, 2008 (Sudbury, ON) – Cycling historian and avid cyclist, Arnold Devlin, who was also a 6-day racing aficionado and contributor to Pedal Magazine, passed away on Wednesday, April 23. Devlin, from Thunder Bay, was a member of the Thunder Bay Cycling Club and loved everything connected with 6-Day racing both in Canada and in Europe, launching a web site www.6dayracing.ca with his friend Eugene Vandal also from Thunder Bay. They brought another enthusiast and friend, Steve Penny from the UK, on board as a contributor. Devlin was a big supporter of Canada’s track scene and racers, and in particular, the Madison team of Martin Gilbert and Ryan McKenzie. June 21, 2007 – Long time Burnaby track member Jack Pilecki passed away last evening as the result of serious injuries sustained in a crash on Tuesday evening.

Pilecki and a friend were enjoying a ride through the Demonstration Forest when during a fast sweeping left hand turn they came upon two roller bladers, one of whom was in the wrong lane. Pilecki attempted to avoid the roller-blader on her left but the two collided at approximately 50kph, sheering Pilecki’s head tube clean from the frame.

Pilecki sustained a serious brain injury and was taken to Lions Gate Hospital for emergency surgery. Pilecki succumbed to his injuries Wednsday night.

The roller-blader involved was placed in the intensive care unit.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jack’s family and friends. He will be remembered for his friendly demeanor and his loss is sharply felt by all those that rode and raced the track with him.

February 27, 2007 (La Paz, Bolivia) – Bolivian police confirm that the body of a dead cyclist is that of Simon Boily, of Alma, Quebec according to CTV. Boily, 23, set off from La Paz by bike on January 21, heading along the Camino de la Muerte, or “Highway of Death” towards the popular tourist town of Coroico with intentions of later returning to La Paz.

The road is unpaved and marked by hairpin turns and steep drop-offs. His body was found in a ravine below the highway. It is believed that Boily died accidentally, but his bicycle and some other belongings were missing. His passport and return plane ticket were found with the body.

His family reported him missing after Boily failed to board a flight back to Canada on February 15.

February 17, 2007 (Quebec City) – Police have reported that they have found the body of 16-year-old Alexandre Morin near a municipal garage in Sillery, Que., identified today by Morin’s family. The promising young Quebec cyclist had been missing since he left to go jogging on Wednesday during a snowstorm.

Close to 1,000 people including volunteers, police officers, tracking dogs and a Canadian Coast Guard helicopter had been involved in the search for Morin when he didn’t return home. Police said Morin had epilepsy but it’s not clear whether that condition contributed to his death.
