RWR/ Peak Winter Series Report – Stage 10

February 22, 2008 – Records are meant to be broken. This past week at various locations across Canada, riders lined up to try and break the record for the Ride with Rendall/Peak Winter Racing Series time trial course during stage 10 of the 18 race series.

The long standing women’s record of 38:02.6, held by Stevens rider Natasha Elliot, looked to be an elusive target since 2005 when it was set. Elusive that is until Natasha’s teammate turned it up a notch this past weekend. Blasting out of the blocks, Sue Schlatter set a blistering pace on her way to a new course record of 37:14.6. Sue’s time was good enough for fifth on the stage overall. Behind Sue, Natasha rode strongly to finish second with a time of 39:02.3. Tenille Hoogland finished off the podium by posting a time of 39:23.5.

Earlier in the series, Derrick St.John (Jet Fuel) came close to the course record of 34:17.6 set by Arron Fillon last year. On that occasion, Derrick set a personal best and took the stage win but went home disappointed. This time, he put his head down and turned out an impressive average wattage to power his way through stage 10’s profile. When he finally looked up, the record had fallen and sat at 33:45.9. Second place on the stage went to Ride with Rendall elite rider Jim Tsilemos, who posted a time of 36:16.8. A surprise third place went to Ride with Rendall cadet rider Karl Hoppner, who turned heads with a time of 36:46.6.

Time will tell if everyone is able to hold onto their form when the series returns to the time trail courses in stages 13 and 14. In the meantime, stage 11 will challenge riders both mentally and physically with a generally flat course with a plateau that will have riders looking for their climbing legs.

The Ride with Rendall/Peak Winter Racing Series is designed for fun and fitness, with the overall GC based on points. The series is for all levels of ability, so come grab your bike and lets go. In addition to the MAXXIS and PEDAL competitions, riders who ride more than 10 races will be eligible for a chance to win a pair of EASTON wheels.
