Rose Festival Race Report

June 7, 2005 — The 16th annual Welland Rose Festival Citizens race got underway under warm, muggy conditions in Chippawa Park, Welland on Sunday, June 5. A mixed field of Senior and Master riders lined up for a 90-minute event filled with primes. Put on by the St. Catharines Cycling Club the race was well attended by most of Ontario’s teams including full squads from ItalPasta and JetFuel/Sympatico.

From the parade lap there were attacks with former national road champion Andrew Randell (Jet/Fuel) taking the race up the road numerous times, only to be brought back. Thirty minutes into the race a serious break of five riders emerged. JetFuel was represented by Tim Lefebvre, who had two former teammates Thorben Wiedtz (Pavan) and Ryan Roth (Gears) also in the move. ItalPasta had Jeff Hansen and KHS had Pat Shea.

The five worked smooth untill they were joined by another break that included JetFuel’s Josh Hall and hometown boy Buck Miller. Also joining the break was Ital’s Dan Maggiacomo, Peter Morse (Chain Reaction) and Jason Valenti of Coach Chris.

Behind Randell was let loose by a tired field and he quickly joined the winning move and essentially rode away for the win. The break sprinted for second with Wiedtz taking Lefebvre, Roth and Hall.
