Health Promotion Minister Jim Watson will be presenting awards to top performing athletes and coaches for 2005 at the annual Ontario Sports Awards dinner tonight.
Among the awards that will be presented will be Male and Female Coaches of the Year, awards for outstanding volunteers and an award for lifetime achievement in sports.
The Minister will also hand out awards for Athletes of the Year. Nominees include two Torino Olympic medalists — speedskater Kristina Groves and figure skater Jeffrey Buttle.
The Ontario Sport Awards is a program of the Ministry of Health Promotion delivered by the Sport Alliance of Ontario. They recognize the top achievements in Sport for Ontarians in seven participant categories: Male Athlete, Female Athlete, Male Athlete with a Disability, Female Athlete with a Disability, Team of the Year, Male Coach, and Female Coach.
The Syl Apps award recognizes Ontario volunteers who have contributed to sport within the province. The Corporate Citation is presented annually by the Province of Ontario to corporations that have been a leader in supporting sport through sustained corporate involvement over several years. And the Rolf Lund Jule Nisse award recognizes the volunteer who has made a “playground to podium” commitment to sport throughout their life.
