Rio 2016 BMX Test Event Delayed as Track Deemed Unsafe – Riders Refuse to Race

by John Symon

October 04, 2015 (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) – A BMX test event scheduled Oct. 2 on the Olympic track in Rio de Janeiro has been delayed until Oct. 4 because of safety concerns reports BBC. Double World Cup winner Liam Phillips (Gbr) sent out messages via social media to say that the delay was “necessary for the riders’ safety” and that riders should not have to race on “sub-standard tracks.”

The exact nature of the problem at Rio remains unclear but apparently the event will now take place on a modified course on Sunday. The BMX track there was designed by Tom Ritzenthaler who designed similar tracks for the Beijing and London Olympics. Rio’s Olympic Games take place Aug. 5-21, 2016.
