April 1, 2011 (Beaumont, California) – The first road stage of the Redlands Classic, the 115km Beaumont Circuit Race, did a fair bit of damage to the peloton, but ultimately didn’t change anything at the top of the overall standings. Team TIBCO/To the Top’s Erinne Willock and Carmen Small, sitting 3rd and 6th overall respectively following yesterday’s opening prologue, finished 5th and 4th on the stage today, narrowly missing out on one of the time bonuses awarded to the top three finishers in the stage.

The stage finished in a bunch sprint, from a greatly diminished bunch, as only 39 riders came to the line together. Among them were Carlee Taylor, Alison Powers and Meredith Miller, who moved up a spot in the overall to 16th.

“Today didn’t play out how I had anticipated,” Miller said. “I don’t know if it was the heat or people waiting until Sunday, but it was a pretty quiet day in the field.”

With temperatures in the low 90s, it took until the final climb on the last lap for things to break up. With one rider up the road, 2nd overall Evelyn Stevens set a hard tempo for teammate and race leader Amber Neben to reel in the move. At the same time, it fragmented the peloton into a number of groups. Willock, Small and Miller were in the front group of about 12 over the top, putting Team TIBCO in a good position for both the stage win and to make a move up the overall.

However, on the fast descent to the finish line, several of the groups re-integrated, bringing several of the better sprinters into the front group. Small and Willock showed their versatility by mixing it up in the sprint finish.

“It’s unfortunate that when we had the small group at the finish, we couldn’t keep ourselves away,” Miller said. “We were in really good position for Erinne and Carmen.”

“It was a good day for us,” added Team Directeur Sportif Lisa Hunt. “We were able to conserve. The heat was a factor, but it wasn’t a super hard race. All the girls were drinking and staying hydrated. We had anticipated a sprint finish, and we talked about trying to get Carmen on the podium. We got close, but I’m happy. The girls are riding great. It was over 90 degrees for 72 miles. It was hard on everybody.”

The Redlands Classic continues Saturday with the Downtown Redlands Criterium.

“Usually it’s one of the hardest and fastest crits we have all season,” Miller said “It’s a longer course with lots of turns, so it’s a pretty technical race. A lot can happen tomorrow. Quite often there is a break that gets off the front. We’ll be racing hard if not going for the stage win. Everybody’s definitely looking forward to it. Because it’s so technical, we have a lot of fun with it.”
