Red Bull Race the Place Returns to Toronto Oct. 3 – Course Preview w/Emily Batty

release by Red Bull Canada

October 01, 2015 (Toronto, ON) – Last year, cyclists descended on Toronto’s iconic Ontario Place for a two-wheeled thrill ride through the abandoned amusement park marking the first time anyone had accessed the grounds since the doors were shut in 2011.

Well, we’re unlocking the gates once again with the return of Red Bull Race the Place this fall on October 3rd in Toronto. It’s only fitting to bring the event back to the city who’s roots run deep in the urban cycling movement to host a race that will challenge riders, ranging from street-hardened couriers to weekend warriors in both fixed gear and open gear categories, to an all-out battle royale.

Be warned, this is not the kind of amusement ride you remember as a kid; it’s a speed-soaked chase through the island’s industrial jungle full of hairpin turns, pedal heavy straightaways and other surprises along the way. Skill and experience on a bike is suggested, so leave the training wheels at home.

The Course… with Tips from Emily Batty!

Taking racers on multiple laps of the 3.4km long track around Ontario Place, the track is a fast, technical circuit featuring tight corners, bridges and narrowing lanes that will force racers to jockey for position along with flat out straightaways that will surely leave legs burning.

Event Format

This year’s event features a new heat format which will ultimately give riders more time to race on the track, replacing the individual time trials of the previous 2014 event.

The Road/Cross category and Track riders will compete together in a 2-lap heat format. The top 3 riders from each heat will advance directly to the finals with the following 2 riders moving to the Last Chance Qualifier. The Women’s heat will see the top 5 females from the heat advance directly to the finals.

The Last Chance Qualifiers will be a 2-lap, do-or-die race with the top 5 riders securing spots in the finals.

The Finals are for all the glory; a mass start race for 40 minutes after which riders will dig deep for a final 3 laps. Awards will go to the top males and to females in each class, including:

– Top 3 Men’s Track (Fixed Gear)
– Top 3 Men’s Road/Cross
– Top 3 Women’s Open Class (Fixed & Open)
