Racer Sportif/Mattamy Homes Junior Development Academy Open House Nov. 20

release by Racer Sportif/Mattamy Homes

November 14, 2015 – It has been a few years since our last group of Junior cyclists graduated into Senior riders, and some onto greater heights in the sport of cycling. Since then, we have experienced a brief hiatus in our program. Young cyclists are a rarity, and it is something that should be embraced when they come along.

As passionate cyclists ourselves, there is nothing better than being able to share this interest with your own kids, and present them the opportunity to really fall in love with the sport of cycling. We have been receiving a fair amount of inquiries with respect to providing a platform through our club for young aspiring cyclists between the ages of 14-18 yrs. This interest cannot be ignored. For the 2016 season, we are launching another Junior development campaign, so we can provide a learning environment for local kids in the Oakville / Halton region.

For over 30 years the Racer Sportif Cycling club has been actively involved in the Canadian Road racing scene at the grass roots level. Dating back to successful National Road racing results for many of our athletes throughout the 1980’s. Most recently our club finished a Junior development cycle that started back in 2010, which saw many of the participating young athletes fine tune their craft and develop onwards to success in the international stages of cycling. Most notably is Sean Mackinnon, who started with our program when he was 14 years old. Now at the age of 20, Sean is rapidly developing into one of the best cyclists that Canada has produced in recent memory. This goes to show that with a little bit of guidance, our young athletes can achieve great things.

The Racer Sportif/ Mattamy Homes Junior Development Program is designed to provide proven structure, a motivating, rewarding environment for athletes between the ages of 14-18 years old, where we can support and identify local cycling talent. However, we still encourage young athletes that are intrigued by the sport of cycling to be apart of the training sessions. Ultimately we strive to provide a high level of fun factor.

Program details:
This program will provide structured training 2 days per week. As we approach the late winter / early spring the program will expand into 3 workouts per week, which will carry through the entire summer.

Training:
Athletes will be assessed with FTP (functional threshold testing) and be engaged in various training opportunities. Not all works outs will be solely focused on the bike, but will at times diversify into other forms of all around fitness. We will also have select workouts that will be held on the Track at the Milton Mattamy Velodrome.
