Possible Junior Women’s Tour de l’Abitibi in 2009

February 1, 2008 (Val d’Or, QC) — The prestigious junior stage race, the Tour de l’Abitibi (TA), will not be staging a junior women’s event in 2008 but is considering to hold one in 2009. Rumours had been circulating that the Tour de l’Abitibi (TA) organization was planning to include the first edition of a junior women’s race this summer. Quebec cycling federation (FQSC) director general, Louis Barbeau, confirmed today that the TA organizers indeed were considering the idea but have decided against it.

“Between the Tour de l’Abitibi (July 25-29), the Junior Men Nations Cup (July 31-August 3), and the Tour de la Relève (categories 10-16 years old, July 26-27), organizers decided that their plates were full,” explained Barbeau.

Pedal also reached TA director, Brigitte Richard, in Val d’Or today. Richard explained that this is the first year that the Nations Cup is part of the TA, complicating the task of the organizing committee. The committee felt it was best to concentrate on the mens’ events and re-examine the prospect of a junior women’s tour for 2009.

Taylor Phinney (USA) US National Team won the 39th edition of the TA in 2007, followed by Guillaume Boivin (Can) Québec and Tony Guinhut (Fra) France Pôle Espoirs. The 2007 final report and results are posted here.
