May 2, 2005 – Bad weather forecasts weren’t enough to keep 680 riders away from the first Plastiglas Ontario Cup of the year at Mansfield. While torrential rain, and even snow, hit many parts of Ontario, Mansfield Outdoor Centre was spared as we were treated to cool spring day with a couple of sprinkles that didn’t even wet the course.

The course snaked up and down the Mansfield escarpment in what can only be described as a course created with these spring conditions in mind.

The men’s elite field is experiencing a changing of the guard in 2005. Bay Cycle’s Derek Zanstra took his first Ontario Cup win with a first year senior Adam Morka, Team Hardwood, hot on his tail the whole race. Mike Garrigan, Team Hardwood, finished a strong third and we’re expecting more podiums for him in his first full season back from injury. In the women’s race it was a Gears Racing sweep with the young, and amazingly talented, Emily Batty cruising to victory followed by Catherine Vipond, who narrowly beat the cagey veteran of the elite women’s circuit Sue Trimble.

April 28, 2005 “” The snow has melted and the birds are chirping: the mountain bike race season is on! The Plastiglas Ontario Cup series opener will kick off this Sunday, May 1 at Mansfield Outdoor Centre. Mansfield’s sandy soil soaks up water like a sponge, and with Sunday’s weather forecast looking better and better, don’t miss this classic mountain bike event.

Ontario’s best mountain bikers will be competing for early season dominance while recreational riders will be out for some fun competition on great trails. Sunday’s cross-country events will test the cyclists over distances ranging from 6.5 to 50 km. The professionals will race from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm “”the amateur events begin at 9:00 am.

Top competitors in the Ontario Cup series are returning from their winter training grounds in Arizona and California, so expect some of these riders to be very fit.

The Plastiglas Ontario Cup Series consists of seven events taking place at premier mountain bike venues all across Ontario. These events have categories for all mountain bike ability levels.
