January 02, 2015 (Toronto, ON) – The final ballots are in and sorry for the delay as we’re pleased to announce the winners of Pedal Magazine‘s 2014 Cycling Awards that recognize all categories including juniors, seniors, U23 and paracyclists from all disciplines encompassing road, MTB, DH, cyclocross, track and BMX.

The big winner this year was Catharine Pendrel, who lives in B.C. but is from Harvey Station, New Brunswick. Pendrel took home double gold for Canada re-claiming the Elite Women’s XC MTB Worlds title along with Commonwealth Games gold. Add a World Cup victory and the MTB and CX national jerseys and it was a stellar year. She topped three Pedal awards winning the coveted Best Overall Cyclist (Male or Female), along with the Best Overall Senior/U23 Female Cyclist, and Best MTB XC Senior/U23 Cyclist (Male or Female).

“Thanks Pedal readers!  2014 was an amazing season. I am looking forward to more adventures and exciting racing in 2015,” wrote Pendrel who is an avid xc skier and recently attended an xc ski camp at Sun Peaks where she put on a well-received presentation.

Svein Tuft was the next big winner with two awards Best Overall Senior/U23 Male Cyclist and Best Road Senior/U23 Cyclist (Male or Female). Tuft wore the pink jersey at the Giro for the first time in his career when his Orica-GreenEdge team won the TTT, he won the TT and RR titles at the Canadian nationals and then became the first Canuck to wear the national team colours at the Tour de France. A fourth in the ITT at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow was followed by TTT silver at the Road Worlds.

We caught up with Tuft at his home in Andorra, “It’s always nice to still be considered for these awards. All I can say is I really appreciate the support I receive from Canadians and Pedal readers. It’s a great honour for me because I am always trying my best to represent Canada well. Thanks very much!.”

The Women’s Team Pursuit squad with Jasmin Glaesser, Stephanie Roorda, Allison Beveridge, Kristi Lay, Laura Brown and Gillian Carleton continues to impress with recent podiums in Mexico and London, and once again claimed the Best Track Senior Cyclist (Male or Female). Meanwhile veteran, Mike Garrigan, pulled out all the stops to win the Best CX Senior/U23 Cyclist (Male or Female) following his stellar victory in Winnipeg reclaiming the Elite Men’s title.

Close battles in the Junior ranks saw Sarah Mason prevail over Emeliah Harvie and Soren Meeuwisse while Bayley Simpson was the final winner of the Best Overall Junior Male Cyclist with Adam Jamieson close behind. Another close battle saw the ever-smiling Shelley Gautier surge ahead to take the award for the Best Paracycling Cyclist (Male or Female).

“It is great to be honoured for all the hard work – thank you for recognizing my efforts. And thanks as well to my Coach Eric Van den Eynde and training partner Alan Greer to help make this award possible for me,” Gautier told Pedal.

The Best Canadian Cycling Moment/Performance in 2014 by far was Pendrel’s resounding victory in the Elite Women’s XC race at the MTB Worlds in Norway. Honourable mention goes to Tuft claiming the pink jersey at the Giro.

Congratulations to all winners and readers that voted – this year was by far the best voting turnout ever and it’s great to see many of Canada’s top riders recognized for their fabulous efforts both at home and abroad.

Once again we had great response to our “fun” categories naming the country’s best shops, cafes, events, and places to ride and we will present these results shortly.
