Paracycling 2009 World Championships Awarded to New Hosts

release by the UCI

May 15, 2009 – The UCI Para-cycling World Championships, originally scheduled to be held in Seville, Spain, from September 3-13, will now be hosted by other organizers. The track events will be held from November, 4-8 2009 in Manchester, Great Britain, following on from the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics in that city from 30 October to 1 November. The road events will be held from September 8-13, 2009 in the Piedmont region of Italy.

The Spanish organizer informed the UCI that it had become impossible for him to organise the Championships awarded by the UCI Management Committee in January 2008 because of financial problems. Despite the best efforts of the Spanish Cycling Federation (RFEC), an alternative arrangement could not be reached with this organiser.

Following the withdrawal, the UCI contacted several potential organizers. The UCI would like to thank the national cycling federations of Great Britain (British Cycling) and Italy (Federazione Ciclistica Italiana) who, at very short notice, have agreed to organise the 2009 UCI Para-cycling World Championships.

The Para-cycling World Championships have been organised under the auspices of the UCI since 2007. More than 300 athletes from over 35 countries will take part in the Championships. This will be the first time that the Championships have been separated into different disciplines (road and track). This will have the benefit of allowing athletes to prepare in a more specific manner for the various events.
