Paolo Bettini to Retire Following 2008 Road Worlds RR

September 27, 2008 (Varese, Italy) – The reigning road world cycling champion Paolo Bettini (Ita) announced he plans to retire following Sunday’s Elite men’s road race where the two-time champ will defend his title on home turf reports AP, AFP and Reuters. The 34-year-old 2004 Olympic road race champion, said he “thought about this a lot” and made the surprise announcement Saturday. A win on Sunday would make Bettini the only rider to capture three straight road world titles.
