Nominate Your Sports Heroes to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame

release by the Canada's Sports Hall of Fame

Canada Sports Hall of Fame logo December 13, 2014 – Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary in 2015. I am writing to update you on the organization and to ask for your assistance in preparing nominations for the Diamond Jubilee Class of 2015. We continue to be grateful for your cooperation and support.

As you know, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame is now located in a beautiful, state-of-the-art,international award-winning purpose-built museum in Canada Olympic Park in Calgary. Just last month, we inducted six remarkable athletes-Horst Bulau, Sarah Burke, Pierre Harvey, Geraldine Heaney, Elizabeth Manley and Gareth Rees–and two inspirational builders-Tim Frick and Kathy Shields-in a moving ceremony and dinner in Toronto. You can see the details of 2014 Induction Celebrations at www.sportshall.ca.

Next Year’s 60th Anniversary Induction Celebrations dinner will be held in Toronto and the date and location will be shared with you once finalized.

Given that 2015 is the 60th Anniversary, we will consider inducting a larger class at the dinner next year. In the first place, we are endeavouring to identify those athletes and builders who recorded their most significant achievements and contributions in the century or so of Canadian sport prior to the establishment of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1955, who meet the criteria for induction, and have never been inducted. The idea is to recognize those athletes and builders at the dinner and in the displays at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. Secondly, in recognition of the fact that Canada has produced a large number of outstanding athletes and builders and that not every one of those has been included, we will consider inducting a larger number of exemplary Canadians in this special year.

The criteria for selection are as follows:

  1. Outstanding athletic achievement/contribution.
  2. Demonstrated critical social values during their journey that all Canadians can be inspired by.
  3. Positively influenced their sport, community, and country.

I would therefore invite you to submit any nominations you feel make the criteria for selection. We would particularly like to hear from you if you know of someone from the pre-1955 period who should be recognized by Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame or someone from the post-1955 period who should be considered. Nomination forms and detailed information are available at www.sportshall.ca and nominations can be submitted to rcowan@cshof.ca.

Thank you very much for your assistance. If you have any questions, please let Mario Siciliano, President and CEO of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, or me know.

With all best wishes,

Bruce Kidd, O.C., Ph.D., LL.D.
