NAS-TRACK Team Racing Creates Traffic Jams

June 27, 2005 – 14 two-rider teams pounded the boards at The Velodrome at Bloomer Park on Friday, June 24 for the most exciting opening night of racing ever as the NAS-TRACK Team Racing League begins its fourth year. Nine Elite teams and 5 ‘teams competed separately in the 2 hour racing program that included three of NAS-TRACK’s signature events, the One Mile Sprint, the Miss and Out and the Madison Team Races.

The Madison is a race style that involves the exchange of places between partners every 40 seconds throughout the length of the bike race. With the transfer of energy from the racing partner to the partner coming in off relief, the racing is always fresh and fast. Riding bikes without brakes, racers reach speeds up to 42 mph on the 1/8th of a mile wooden bicycle track that is banked 44 degrees in the turns and 13 degrees
in the straights. The track is the only one of its kind – and the fastest
track – in North America.

With one jam after another, the racers never let up all night long, even in near 100 degree temperatures. In the final moments night four teams had a shot a victory. But the winning team for the night was one lap track record holder Terry Palmer of Macomb Township and his partner 17-year-old Luke Cavendar of Troy as Team Neon. The pair grabbed the win
in the final few moments of the 100 lap Madison by lapping the field and
then finishing first in the final sprint. They finished with 81 points, 7 points ahead of second place contenders Team White of Rick Denman of California and Rob Akers of Garden City. Third place with 70 points went to Tony Bruley and Jim Houston who also lapped the field in
the final moments of the Team Race.

Among the AA’s (riders with less experience), the win went to
NAS-TRACK’s powerful female racer Kacey Manderfield and her partner for the night Craig VonSeeger. Manderfield, a 19 year out of Lake Orion , lead her team’s charge to lap the rest of the AA field twice during their 50 lap Madison .

Big winners for the evening was a hillside filled with race
fans who have come to count on the excitement of NAS-TRACK Team Racing
every Friday night. The races are called by an announcer and accompanied
by the live music of the NAS-TRACK Pit Crew. Spectators bring picnic
dinners and lawn chairs and are invited to get within inches of the racers
by coming into the infield of the track. Children under 18 are admitted
free. Admission is $3.

NAS-TRACK Team Racing continues every Friday night through
August 12th. The Racing starts at 7 pm . The Velodrome at Bloomer Park is
located at the end of John R in Rochester Hills. Call Dale Hughes, Race Director, at 248-951-3705 for further information about the Velodrome or NAS-TRACK Team Racing.
