August 05, 2016 (Milton, ON) – This fall, the Town of Milton will be transitioning high performance track cycling programs to a new independent organization entitled the National Cycling Institute – Milton (NCIM).
The transition will begin with a select group of program areas, including the Youth High Performance Program and both Youth and Adult Racing. The Town of Milton will continue to operate all other programs in the 2016 season, including drop-in cycling programs.
When the Mattamy National Cycling Centre was built, the Town of Milton always envisioned that an independent organization would operate some of the track cycling programs at the facility. This would align with how independent not-for-profit groups commonly operate their own sports programs and how many of the developmental and competitive sports programs are offered in Milton (Milton Minor Hockey, Milton Skating Club, Milton Springers Gymnastics, etc.).
“We are pleased to support the launch of the National Cycling Institute – Milton,” said Milton Mayor Gord Krantz. “NCIM will forge an exciting path to grow cycling in Milton, especially for our youth.”
NCIM is a not-for-profit organization formed to advance cycling in Milton and beyond. Part of their mandate is to build a strong base of cycling participants in Canada. In addition to offering cycling programs for individuals of all ages and skill levels, NCIM will engage in child and youth outreach cycling programs within a club structure.
To help build Canada’s next generation of cyclists, its mandate also includes operating a high performance youth training academy. This will include the Youth High Performance Program, as well as providing ongoing coaching and racing support for youth athletes. NCIM will be aligned with both the Ontario Cycling Association and Cycling Canada Cyclisme’s Long Term Athlete Development model.
“We are excited to begin the transition envisioned when the facility was built and look forward to building on Canada’s cycling legacy,” said Paul DeVries, Acting Chair, National Cycling Institute – Milton.
Track cycling registration for fall-winter 2016/2017 will be offered through both the NCIM and the Town of Milton for their respective programs. NCIM registration will be available on their website here for Youth High Performance Training, Youth Racing and Adult Racing. All other programs will be available for registration through the Town of Milton’s website here.
