by pedalmag.com

July 08, 2014 (Lachine, QC) July 8, 2014 – Félix Côté-Bouvette (Vélosélect) and his teammate, Mathieu Roy, finished first and second tonight in pro-elite men with a time of 1: 03: 04 during stage 5 of the Mardis Cyclistes presented by Jean Coutu. They were followed by Bobby Bailey (Dealer.com) in third.

“I tried mainly just following the leaders, saving my energy for the final sprint said Côté-Bouvette. “Mathieu did a superb job leading me up to the final straight away. The Fantino-Mandello team hesitated slightly before the last turn because of the rain and at that moment we gave it our all. Moreover, today is my birthday; I’m 21!”

Some 103 cyclists were massed on the start line of the 50 km men’s race as thunderstorms threatened. Several regulars, including Simon Lambert-Lemay (Garneau-Quebecor) were absent to participate in BC Superweek in Vancouver. There were a few crashes on the slippery pavement, but nothing serious. One American cyclist, Joshua Lehmann (Dealer.com) told the organizers that drove up from Vermont, seeking the black jersey for the most combative rider.

Jean-François Laroche (Fantino-Mandello) finished fourth while Stephen Keeping (Transport Lacombe) finished fifth, picking up enough points to tie Simon Lambert-Lemay in the general classification (GC). Both now have 368 cumulative points while Pierrick Naud (Garneau-Quebecor) follows them with 341.

Among the women, it was Rebecca Beaumont (Independent) who won the 24 km race, followed by Audrey Bernard in second place and Raur Meilleur Harvey (Collectif Bikurious) in third. However, it is Adriane Provost (SAS-Mazda) who leads the GC with 219 points; Bernard follows her with 162. Provost was also among those absent from the race in Lachine.

Among the cadets (men), Flynn Schooley (West Quebec Wheelers) won with a time of 34:45 on the 24 km circuit. Teammate John Stuart finished in second place, followed by John Grant (VIPYRS) of Vancouver (where he is the provincial champion against the clock) in third. But the results tonight have changed nothing with the top GC rankings where it’s still Thierry Kirouac-Marcassa (NCCH) leading with 193 points, followed by Griffin “The Machine from Lachine” Schwartz with 139. Many top cadets were away to compete at the Tour de la Relève in Rimouski.

As for minimes, Emma Delisle (CWB-Ultimate) won first place among the girls, her third win in five stages. For boys, it was Antoine Dalterio (Espoirs Laval) who won, celebrating his fourth win in five races.

The Mardis Cyclistes are presented every Tuesday until August 12, evening of the grand finale. The circuit is located around Lasalle Park in the Montreal borough of Lachine (Bus 90). The minime race begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the cadets and women, (6 p.m.), ending with the great race to the Pro-Elite Cup at 6:50 p.m. The races are free for spectators.
